Dentistry is important at every age and stage of life. Kunnel Dental Center is a family dentist office in Skokie, Illinois and we treat patients of all ages including young children. Preventive care and conservative treatments are the main focus of our children’s dentistry program. Pediatric Dentist vs. Family Dentist
Pediatric Dentistry is one of nine dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association. A pediatric dentist provides care for infants, children and adolescents. On the other hand, a family dentist is usually a general dentist who sees adults and children in one office. Patients in Skokie appreciate the convenience that Kunnel Dental Center provides for family dentistry.
A typical child’s visit with Dr. Jessie Kunnel may involve:
- Teeth cleaning
- Fluoride treatment
- Diagnostic x-rays
- Dental caries (cavities) screening
Pediatric Dentistry FAQs
When should my child first visit the dentist?
The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends parents have a dental assessment of infants by one year of age. We find that most children do not need routine visits until about age 3. If you are concerned about the health of your child or infant, contact our office to speak with the dentist.
Why are baby teeth important? Don’t they just fall out?
Despite the fact that they "fall out", baby teeth play a very important role in the future health of a child. Healthy teeth promote proper chewing, healthy diet and speech development. The primary teeth also help to keep a space for the permanent teeth that will eventually emerge. If baby teeth are lost early either because of an accident or decay, the dentist may use a space retainer to ensure that the permanent tooth has the space it needs when the time comes.
How can I prevent cavities in my child?
Dental cavities are a major concern among children. The most important thing parents can do to prevent cavities is encourage daily brushing and flossing of teeth. Children should have a healthy diet with limited amounts of juice, sweets and other snacks. Routine visits to the dentist will also prevent cavities.
Dr. Kunnel may also offer dental sealants to prevent tooth decay. Dental sealants are made of bio-compatible materials, forming a protective barrier over teeth. They can be placed in a single visit and offer long lasting protection.
